5 Must-Have Fall Transition Pieces to Always Have Something to Wear

It can be difficult to change your summer wardrobe for autumn. First, there’s the issue of temperature: It’s cold in the mornings and frequently hot in the afternoons. The issue of knowing which season to dress for also arises: Raise your hand if you’ve ever entered a room where everyone is wearing their cosiest fall knit with a corduroy skirt after you’ve worn a floaty linen dress in early September.

But it becomes easier to dress for those transitional weeks between seasons if you have the correct essential pieces. Here, we surveyed personal stylists to determine the essential items that every ageing woman needs to own in order to wear during the transitional months between summer and autumn.

5 Must-Have Fall Transition Pieces

Invest in essential pieces that will elevate your wardrobe from summer to fall and beyond, such as well-chosen sweaters and essential coats you’ll wear often.

1. Leather Leggings

Activities abound in the early fall, including cider tastings, pumpkin picking, and short walks amid breathtaking foliage. Throughout it all, comfort should be your top priority. Leather leggings can help with that.

According to professional image stylist Elizabeth Kosich, proprietor of Elizabeth Kosich Styling, ‘pair leather leggings with a turtleneck, knit cloak, statement belt and rough boots for a workday style, or an extra-long T-shirt, faux fur vest and stylish sneaker for a weekend warrior attitude’. “Both have layers that can be piled on and peeled off depending on the temperature.”

This will remain a go-to garment come winter, when the temperature drops even further.

2. A cashmere top

You can switch out your regular T-shirt with a cashmere one as Labour Day approaches.

Personal stylist and image consultant Andie Sobrato adds, “It is a great option that is more formal than a standard cotton T-shirt but is still easy and convenient to throw on.” “I find they really pair with everything so that they can be worn with jeans for a more casual look, trousers for a more corporate look, and even a skirt if you want to be dressed up.”

Despite being bare-chested, the knit keeps you comfortable. Sobrato adores Quince’s rendition.

A short-sleeve cardigan or crochet top is an additional knit alternative. “They can be matched with a sleek trouser.

3. A tunic-style dress

That elusive summer-to-fall outfit that we’re all after. A tunic is what Kosich suggests. Wear them in the summer with sandals and minimal jewellery. Next, you may pair it with ballerina flats and opaque tights.

“Add a moto jacket for extra warmth and then, as temps drop even more, layer a skinny turtleneck under the tunic,” Kosich continues. “It’s a whole new look for your fave summertime dress, only winterized.”

Other styles of midi-length dresses with sleeves can also be made using this technique. Sobrato recommends one with buttons down the front and ribbed jersey material.

“What’s wonderful about a dress like this is that you can dress it up with heels, dress it down with trainers or even pair it with boots in the autumn,” she continues. It’s all about adaptability throughout transitional seasons.

4. Blazer with linen

A cheerful senior couple is outside in the city walking on the street, socializing and drinking coffee.

As summer draws to a conclusion, you should also start considering light layers. “A linen blazer is a lightweight layer that can be worn with jeans, wide-leg trousers or even a skirt,” Sobrato explains.

Get ready to hit the town by pairing it with a block heel and culotte pant. Alternatively, wear it with a shift dress for work. If the air conditioning gets too cold, this is the ideal item to keep at your desk.

5. Motorcycle Jacket

A motorbike jacket is the last item you should include in your temporary capsule.

“Add layers under it, or over it, and watch how it delivers on both form and function without fail,” Kosich says. “Pair with wide-leg trousers, a Breton tee and platform sneakers for a chic, understated look—for more warmth, add either a skinny turtleneck under the Breton tee or a cropped pea coat over the moto jacket.”

This piece will serve you well for decades if you choose it carefully. Jackets made of leather never go out of style.
